On October 29th, two French workers were detained at Chicago's O'Hare airport, as a part of the French General Confederation of Labor (CGT) struggle against plant closures. The International Metalworkers Federation reports:
The two unionists, who were detained for four hours, were part of a delegation of CGT members who traveled to Chicago to take part in an action at the company's shareholder meeting on October 30.
Last April, the workers at the Molex electronics factory in Southwest France kidnapped their managers in an ongoing struggle to prevent the factory's closure. The workers also struck in July.
These actions were in response to a global restructuring and outsourcing scheme announced by the Illinois-based company, which included the closure of the 283-employee factory in Villemur-sur-Tarne, France.
In Chicago, union-members joined in solidarity with French workers, who have exposed Molex's repeated violation of French law. David Moberg has a good analysis at In These Times.
